WESTVILLE Boys’ High School (WBHS) Geography teacher, Dr Trevor Cowie, pursued his passion for teaching after matriculating and his love for his job has continued to grow during the past four decades.
He has carried out his duties with love, loyalty and utmost dedication for the past 41 years, 31 years at WBHS. The 65-year-old, who values education, studied at the former University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal) where he also completed a Doctorate in Education.

Dr Cowie regards himself as a gregarious individual.
“I love interacting with and being around people: the boys and my colleagues. It is one of the things that has kept me in the industry,” said Dr Cowie with a smile.
He said he loves teaching Geography as it is a unique subject.
“Half of it deals with the humanities while the other half of the subject is scientific,” he said.
Although Dr Cowie is retiring, he will continue teaching at the school as he has been employed by the School Governing Body.
He will also supervise learnership or internship programmes at the school.
He pointed out that teaching has changed over the past years as children can now use the internet to access information.
“Teachers can now focus a little less on content in their teaching.
“Classrooms are now more collaborative, more teamwork is involved especially now during lockdown where teachers are working more collaboratively with their colleagues who possess greater IT/technology knowledge.
Humility, respect and valuing other people’s opinions are some of the values that Dr Cowie holds close to his heart.
“I am a very religious person and respect everyone, I accept people for who they are. You should always be willing to learn from others and never think you know everything.
Dr Cowie is a happily married man and a father to two children.
“I am patiently waiting for my first grandchild due later this year,” he said.
The Westville resident said he is a huge soccer fan and a big supporter of Liverpool FC.
He has recently retired as chairman of the KZN High Schools Football Association, where he was involved for 26 years.
He described himself as an outgoing person who is genuine, “with me what you see is what you get.”
