#schoolsreopening: St Benedict School

St Benedict School’s in-depth response to its learners returning to school during level 3 lockdown.

How many learners are you expecting to have back in the two grades that are allowed to return to classrooms?
We are a small school and are expecting 98 per cent of our children back

What measures have been implemented by the school to ensure that social distancing is adhered to outside of the classrooms?
We have used tape as a means for children to understand social distancing outside the classrooms – although, in the Primary School, teachers have really tried to make it look a little more friendly by adding their own touches of creativity e.g stars and emoji’s around the school.

What measures have been implemented by the school to ensure that children have easy access to hand sanitister?
We are lucky that the primary school classrooms have hand basins attached to them, so we will be emphasising handwashing with soap and water. However, all classrooms have a bottle of hand sanitizer placed strategically at the door to the classroom. This is in both the high school and the primary school.

Will the school be providing masks for the children who cannot afford their own?
Children will be expected to bring their own masks.

Will online learning continue, alongside classroom lessons, for the children who are not in good health to return to classrooms?
Yes, we have accommodated all children who have opted to stay at home.

Will children remain in one class the whole day to ensure that children are not exposed to another child’s germs?
Yes, children will be kept separately. As we are a small school, we are able to allow children space to sit in the gardens so that they are outdoors for some part of the day for their breaks. Each child has been asked to bring their own beach towel to sit on so that social distancing is kept but they will still be comfortable on the grass under the watchful eye of staff.

What other measures have been put into place by the school with regards to the Covid-19 pandemic?
A strict regime has been put into place. Children (or any visitor) will all enter through our main reception area where a record will be kept of temperatures and hands will be sanitized. Maintenance staff have been given strict routines and will check and sanitize regularly. A signed and dated checklists will record daily operations. We have also appointed two COVID-19 protocol officers to ensure that all requirements are fulfilled.

Do you feel the children will be able to continue with the current curriculum having only done home school for two months?
Yes, I do. The staff have been working incredibly hard with all our children throughout lockdown via different internet platforms and as a result, children will be well prepared to continue with the curriculum and have it completed by the end of the year.
