Durban mayor condemns killing of Hammarsdale Metro policemen

Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has condemned the killing of law officers and has urged people who may have information that could assist arrest the culprit/s to come forward.

ETHEKWINI mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda has condemned the killing of two Metro policemen.

The two officers were murdered in Hammarsdale while driving to work this morning.

Kaunda has called for a swift investigation and the arrest of those responsible for this crime.

The mayor said the leadership of the municipality viewed police killings as a direct attack on the authority of the state and urged community members who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.

“We are deeply disturbed by the senseless death of our police officers in the hands of criminals who have no regard for the law. We are calling for more collaboration with our communities to curb this scourge of police killings,” he said.

Kaunda also sent his heartfelt condolences to the family of a person who was killed when an overhanging veranda collapsed in the Durban CBD today.

He added that the municipality was committed to ensuring that all the buildings in the city are structurally sound to avoid such incidents.

“As part of our inner-city regeneration programme, we have engaged property owners to comply with the City’s by-laws and more importantly, renovate dilapidated buildings.”

The mayor promised a thorough investigation to establish the cause of the collapse and urged all involved to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies.
