Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele said, it is alleged that on 15 May, the victim (67) was at his Drummond home when five suspects, armed with a firearm and knives, stormed inside the house.

Manqele said the robbery  took place just after 7pm. “The victim was allegedly stabbed several times and tied up in one of the bedrooms,” he added.

According to Manqele, the suspects then ransacked the house and stole a TV, laptop and other small items including bank cards.

“At gunpoint, the suspects demanded pin codes for the bank cards. The victim managed to untie himself and went to hospital. Later an amount of about R7000 was withdrawn in Hammarsdale and Pietermaritzburg,” said Manqele.

He added that police received a tip-off about the suspects and seven suspects, aged between 18 and 34, were arrested and some of the stolen items have been recovered.

The arrested suspects will be charged for house robbery and will appear at the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 June.
