Man dies in single vehicle accident on Queensburgh’s deadly M7

The so-called death trap, which is the M7 highway running through Queensburgh, has claimed yet another victim, after a man's body had to be retrieved this morning.

EMERGENCY rescue personnel, from a variety of services, worked tirelessly to retrieve the body of a man who died this morning (30 May) in an accident on the M7, near the N2 off-ramp.

According to reports, the man was trapped in his car which overturned after he allegedly lost control while driving westbound on the M7.

Both Rescue Care paramedics and Life emergency services reported just before 7am on their media reporting WhatsApp groups that the accident had taken place and a man had died.

It is believed the accident occurred around 6.30am.

According to Life emergency services, the man is believed to be a police officer, although it is unclear whether the man was on duty at the time of the accident.

Death trap

The M7, which runs through Queensbrugh and connects the Bluff in the east and Pinetown in the west, has earned the reputation of being, according to those who use it regularly, “a death trap”.

Lockdown

Even the lockdown period and curfew implemented as part of a national state of disaster in response to the Covid-19 pandemic hasn’t prevented accidents.

Despite lighter traffic on many roads, the M7 still saw more than its fair share of accidents take place.

However, it hasn’t been the only site of accidents during lockdown.

Earlier this week, paramedics and the fire department in Pinetown had to use the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to help free a man from a serious accident in New Germany.

Investigating

According to Garrith Jamieson of Rescue Care, authorities, including SAPS, were on the scene of the accident on Saturday morning on the M7, and will be investigating.
