Kloof High calls on past learners to unite

The Upper Highway school is putting together a digital wall of its past learners to celebrate its 60th birthday this year.

TO celebrate its 60th anniversary, Kloof High School will build a digital photo wall on its social media platforms and has called on its past learners to submit their photos and stories to help populate their platforms.

Kloof High School’s marketing manager, Tamaryn Van Wyk, said that part of the birthday celebration was to further relationships with the school’s past learners, many of whom are now living abroad.

“We have received wonderful feedback from a variety of past learners. It is inspiring to see just how far so many of our them have gone in life. Our goal is to collect 60 stories from 60 past learners in honour of our 60th year as a high school,” said Tamaryn.

Past learners excelOne of the learners who has already submitted a piece is, Steven Watts, class of 1995.

He is the owner and creator at Slyde Hand Boards in partnership with Ashton Kutcher and Mark Cuban from the series, Shark Tank.

“I have some really great memories of my time at Kloof. I loved the sport and the friends I made and still have to this day. It’s important to have that network of people you can trust as you go through life. The friends you make in high school are the ones who will generally be there the longest,” said Steven.

The Class of 1994’s Tim Ellis, said, “The world is changing and you have been instrumental in that. Never give up and never stop producing the excellence you are so well known for. All I can say for myself is: thank you. For the future generations of Kloof High kids, keep the voice of hope and inspiration sounding clear. You won’t see a fraction of your impact on the world, but I can promise, it is, and will continue to be, dramatically profound.”

Nicholas Haarhoff, class of 1995, said he went on to graduate at the top of his class in his MBA programme with a perfect GPA, obtained multiple pilot licenses as well as Flight Instructor Accreditation in Canada and the USA, acquired scuba diving certifications up to the level of Dive Master; and most recently received a graduate certificate from Harvard in Business Analytics.

“The experiences I’ve had are nothing short of amazing. I have trained search-and-rescue pilots out of McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, USA; worked in businesses from Hong Kong to Sao Paulo, lived in multiple countries, been skiing in Colorado, enjoyed vacations in the Caribbean, cycled the Tour De France Alps stages and flown myself on private aircraft to some of the wildest, unimaginable places on earth. Just last year I met the Vice President of the United States of America, Mike Pence.

“I continue to quietly support the school and its learners. Most recently, I flew to attend an event at Yale University in New Haven, CT to support my fellow Kloof High School learners at the Worlds Scholars Cup.”
