Cowies Hill Lions Club roars with compassion

The most recent donation from the Lions Club of Cowies Hill to two local NPOs consisted of a R3 000 food hamper.

TO help ease the financial strain placed on non-profit organisations during the lockdown, the Cowies Hill Lion’s Club recently made another R3 000 grocery donation to two organisations in need.

The food bundle included maize meal, tin food, oil, vegetable combo packs, mealie meal, fruit, as well as 5x5kg soya chunks, 20 pockets of soup powders, 10 containers of spice mix and 80 packets of chilli beef soya mince.

The Open Door Crisis Care Centre received an influx of domestic violence victims as a result of the pandemic, a few of them with infants. They were taken to the organisation’s safe houses.

“They have arrived with virtually nothing but the clothes on their backs and it has been necessary to clothe and feed them during their stay,” said the chairman of the Cowies Hill Lion’s Club chairman, Lyn Botha. “We were alerted to this problem and have worked closely with them to provide much-needed food stuff for both the victims and their infants.”

The Open Door Crisis Care Centre’s Thora Mansfield thanked the Lions Club of Cowies Hill for its continued support.

The Mariannridge community has remained close to the hearts of the Cowies Hill Lions Club members since the floods devastated the area in April last year.

The local Methodist Church appealed to the organisation for help and it has sent regular food parcels to the church, obtained from monthly food collection drives.

“It was a no-brainer to include them in our choice to hand out food parcels in this time of the pandemic,” said Lyn.

Mariannridge Methodist Church’s Ian Edwards thanked the service organisation for their generous donation and assistance.

“On behalf of the community, I thank you. This will be shared within the community and I will make parcels to be handed out to those in need in Mariannridge. We need to remember that people aren’t just hungry today, they are hungry tomorrow and so forth. We must remember the nutrition of the meal, and this is very important with the foods that have been donated as we will be able to provide them with more than just the starches, but really nutritional meals.”

The funds used to purchase the food were raised by the NPO and a large portion of this came from its largest fund-raiser, the Charity Race Day at Greyville Racecourse held in February last year.

The total value of food bought and donated to the two organisations during the pandemic is about R10 000.
