Help Assagay’s Sonja get back on track

The Upper Highway horsing community has been called on to help Sonja replace her two saddles and a laptop, which were stolen during a house robbery.

IN the midst of a nationwide lockdown, Sonja Rahn, the founder of the Flying High Vaulting Club NPO, and her mother, were victims of a home robbery.

The criminals stole two saddles and a computer, three items that are essential for Sonja to earn a living as well as run the vaulting community development projects.

Sonja lives with her elderly mother in a rented cottage in Assagay.

The robbers hit the property at about 4am and the mother and daughter duo woke up when they heard the disturbance inside their home, recently.

“Fortunately, nearby neighbours reacted when they heard the commotion and the criminals took off, unfortunately not empty-handed. We were shaken from the experience,” said Sonja.

Also on the property are Sonja’s two horses, which are a special part of her life and are also essential to ensure she makes a living.

With no insurance to cover the losses, the theft of the saddles and the computer are a huge blow as they are not easily replaceable items.

“The horses can’t be ridden without saddles and it is difficult to function without a computer or laptop,” she said.

Sonja is unable to work to pay for her day-to-day living expenses as well as cover the R1 300 per month for horse feed. She is a qualified riding instructor and earns her living through riding classes.

Sonja is also a volunteer instructor for the non-profit organisation, SA Riding for the Disabled (SARDA).

Her other passion is running a community development vaulting programme for children from the local townships. With Sonja’s patience, knowledge and encouragement, the children have continued to flourish within the sport.

SARDA’S Linda Wilson, said, “Sonja is truly a selfless, giving and inspiring person that greatly deserves support in any way possible following this distressing burglary incident.”

Appeal for help

Assistance with replacement saddles, a computer or laptop, or with horse feed would help Sonja to get her life back on track, earn a living and resume her work with both non-profit organisations. Contact Sonja on 076 020 9224.
