NGOs spread love to homeless

Members of the NGOs thanked all the volunteers and sponsors for their support during this trying time.

THEY say time is the most precious gift you can give a person.

The NGOs helping feed the homeless in Pinetown at Lahee Park thanked the volunteers who have been assisting to prepare food for the past few weeks.

Wednesday, 6 May was the last day that the Highway Christian Community Church (HCC), El Gibbor Kitchen and the Pinetown Street Ministries prepared food to feed the homeless throughout the day.

“From Thursday, we will just be providing them with breakfast as most of our volunteers are going back to work but there are other organisations that will be taking over.

“We won’t desert them, we care a lot about the homeless,” said Donna Walker from HCC.

Walker said most of the volunteers are going back to work.

“We are thankful for everything and also grateful to the sponsors. This work requires lots of commitment,” she said.

Walker said there were about 170 to 180 people at the shelter.

“The situation is a lot better than when we started. Most of our grievances have been sorted and there is even a barbwire fence around the shelter.”

Steph Amod from El Gibbor Kitchen said the NGOs will now focus more on communities.

“We have had many families appealing for assistance. We will try and help with food parcels where we can,” said Amod.

She also noted the love and united spirit shown by the community during this time.

“We would not have done it by ourselves, it has been great to see the community coming together. The homeless felt the kindness and love and a sense of belonging,” said a grateful Amod.

The NGOs still require donations to assist the needy families.

People who wish to assist the organisations can contact Walker on 082 321 7726 or call Steph from El Gibbor Kitchen 3610 on 084 081 9130.
