Brigitte’s heart beats for Kloof SPCA

The Highway Mail chatted to the Kloof and Highway SPCA's Brigitte Ferguson about her first five years at the organisation.

BRIGITTE Ferguson has an unbridled passion for animals and their welfare. To this end, she has poured her heart and soul into the work she does at the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

With her five-year anniversary fast approaching, the Highway Mail spoke to the fund-raising assistant and trainee inspector about her time at the local non-profit organisation.

When did you start working at the Kloof and Highway SPCA and why did you apply for a role at the NPO?

I started in August 2015 and I really do hope they throw me a party to celebrate! I always wanted to work at this SPCA and be involved with animal welfare. It is my calling and my passion.

Where did you work before you took up a position at the organisation?

I worked as a receptionist at a vet in Westville.

Describe your typical day:

I wake up and its dog cuddles immediately. I check my own social media for at least 30 minutes before I even think of getting out of bed. I then get my daughter ready, she’s six going on 16, and then pick up my caffeine hit from the garage. My work day starts with a social media overview for two hours and then after that, there is literally no typical day. You can be requested to attend a call out, deal with aggressive dogs, help in reception, catch feral cats, work on fund-raising events, press releases and then there is also the planning. As I said, no typical day.

What is your favourite memory made at the Kloof and Highway SPCA?

It was when we homed a dog named Toast. His whole body was burnt and he spent two months being rehabilitated. He was afraid and he made such a good recovery and was put in such a good home. It is just a reminder of why we do the work that we do.

What is your current Netflix binge?

Too Hot to Handle and Money Heist.

Describe yourself in three words:

Hard-working, strong-willed and passionate.

What three things do you always have on you?

Cellhphone, lip ice and snacks, generally Woolworths crackers.

When the lockdown is lifted and travel abroad is allowed, where is the first place you would to travel to?

Definitely the Seychelles as I love the beach, you can day drink all day, swim and snorkel. It looks like the perfect place to be.

What musician or band are you currently obsessed with?

Fits and the Tantrums. If there is one thing you could change in your life, what would it be?It would be honestly be to stop being a big procrastinator.
