Westville’s golden couple make a splash

Jim and Wendy Saunders, arguably Westville's cutest couple, recently did the Highway area proud as they won a myriad of medals at a swimming championship.

WESTVILLE’S powerhouse couple, Wendy and Jim Saunders, recently dominated at the 36th South African Masters Swimming Champs as they raked in a combined total of 16 medals.

Wendy (85), who swims in the 85 to 89 age group, won eight gold medals and, with a naughty giggle, said this was because the other women in her category had simply ‘fallen off the planet’.

Wendy won the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, the mixed 4x50m medley relay, the 4x50m mixed freestyle relay, the 50m and 100m freestyle and the 50m backstroke races.

Jim (83) claimed two gold, one silver and five bronze medals.

“I had stiffer competition and bronze is in the colour this season,” he laughed.

“Swimming is the best sport for people with relaxed muscles. We may not look it, but we feel young!”

To prepare for the competition, the couple used to visit the local gym each day.

Now, with the lockdown in full effect, they do laps in their pool at home.

Jim, or Toyboy as he is affectionately called by Wendy, swims 3km each day.

“I don’t do nearly that amount,” said Wendy. “But I really do enjoy swimming!”

“I always admired the fact that Jim can swim so well. I was 18 years old at the time, and Jim was 16 when I used to go to all of his galas. Even though I loved to watch, I wasn’t the slightest bit interested myself and didn’t make any effort until the club needed an older person to compete in relays. I was 73 at the time and practiced in our pool at home until I felt I could compete. In my very first competition I came first and third,” said a proud Wendy.

When they are not in the swimming pool doing laps, the couple spend their time between two local church groups and Wendy collects antiques and dolls.

“I used to paint water colours, but not so much anymore,” she admitted.

The couple thanked each person who showed them support and kindness during the recent championship.

The duo are part of Synergy, a combination of the East Coast and Highway swimming clubs.

“The amalgamation attracted many new swimmers and several of them are world class. The spirit in the new club is of a very high standard. We have a tireless helpful committee who would welcome newcomers from ages 20 to infinity,” said Wendy.
