“This includes the appointment of a multidisciplinary committee which is responsible for all Covid-19 related matters, the provision of personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks and aprons,” said Shange.

He stated all centres have been cleaned and disinfected.

“Hand sanitisers have been placed at all entry points and officials have been allocated to sanitise every person entering our facilities.”

According to Shange, visitation to their centres has been suspended to ensure that officials and inmates are protected.

“The medical staff has been trained on Covid- 19 by the officials from the Department of Health. These officials will also train all officials in the correctional centres.”

He added that the screening of officials and inmates is done on a daily basis.

“Isolation cells have been cleaned and sanitised for the separation of new inmates who are kept for 14 days before they can come into contact with other inmates.

“Stringent security measures have been put in place. Visitors to the official residences are strictly controlled. The visitor is required to bring their Identity Document and proof of residence and he or she needs to call the official to come and identify him or her before access is allowed,” said Shange.

Shange added that this is done so that it will be easy for contact tracing.

The management area has also developed new registers for service providers, SAPS and domestic workers.

The management area is also making sure that awareness is created for both officials and inmates.

He said frequent hand washing and sanitisation is practised.

In its commitment DCS emphasised on the positive message “I can stop the spread of Coronavirus/Covid-19”.
