Covid-19: Durban municipality suspends orange bag collections

All garden drop off sites and garden landfills will be closed from Tuesday, 31 March until further notice.

ETHEKWINI Cleansing & Solid Waste Unit has released a statement detailing the revised requirements for waste collection.

According to the statement, refuse collection will follow normal collection schedules, however, the collection of orange bags has been suspended until further notice to reduce the risk of contamination.

Instead, residents are encouraged to limit the amount of recyclables generated or reuse, up-cycle or store recyclables on their property or, as a last resort, dispose of them in black bags for collection.

All garden drop off sites and garden landfills will be closed from Tuesday, 31 March until further notice.

Residents are advised to limit cutting and pruning, to reuse by composting or store on their property until the service resumes.

The Bisasar Road, Mariannhill and Shallcross landfills which accept garden refuse, builder’s rubble and sand will be closed from Tuesday 31st March until further notice.

Residents are required to double bag all person hygiene and sanitary products without compressing the waste.

It is advised that this waste is handled using single use gloves or by ensuing hands are sanitised before and after handling.

Residents are also asked to prevent placing bags in locations where they can be accessed by animals or waste salvagers.

Waste bags are only to be placed out for collection if they are full
