KSP collects another glass recycling win

The local primary school once again won the regional award for collecting the most glass in a year.

KLOOF Senior Primary School collected a whopping 71.4 tons of glass bottles and jars in 2019 and was announced as the regional winner of The Glass Recycling Company’s (TGRC) annual schools competition.

For its continued efforts, the school also received a R30 000 prize.

The 2019 competition saw schools compete across Gauteng, the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Durban.

The three top-performing schools were selected in each participating region and received R30 000 (first prize for regional winner), R20 000 (regional runner-up) and R10 000 (regional third prize).

Throughout the competition, there were also monthly prizes awarded to the top performing schools per region.

Schools within each of these areas were invited to apply for the placement of glass banks. Apart from placing glass banks at the schools, TGRC also supplied curriculum compliant material to empower educators to facilitate a holistic view of the glass recycling process.

“Besides enabling the schools to play a pivotal role in reducing pollution within each participating province, this competition also assists in fostering entrepreneurship among the youth, imparting valuable skills that will help them during the next phase of their educational journey, as well as when they enter the job market,” said the CEO of The Glass Recycling Company, Shabeer Jhetam.

KSP took first place in the region, Isnembe Secondary School claimed second place and Mthombeni Primary School took third place. Altogether, the three winning schools in KZN collected about 138 tons of glass, the equivalent of 414 000 glass bottles.

“By recycling these glass bottles and containers, these three schools have saved enough energy to light a compact florescent lightbulb for six years and five months or power a computer for three months and 20 days. This is a phenomenal effort towards a greener South Africa,” said Shabeer.

The school’s principal, Bernice Love, said, “Kloof Senior Primary is very proud to be the regional winners of this competition. Our families and the community are to thank for their outstanding effort. We have some very special families who go over and above to assist in collecting glass. All funds raised are being used to upgrade the school facilities, especially our swimming pool. We look forward to challenging other schools this year, especially the Western Cape.”
