Victim shoots knife-wielding thief in Pinetown CBD

The suspect sustained one gunshot wound to the stomach and was arrested in hospital after the victim identified him.

A 29-YEAR-OLD suspect is under police guard following a shooting in the Pinetown CBD this morning, (Monday, 23 March).

According to Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, it is alleged  a 45- year-old motorist was at the corner of Josiah Gumede and Anderson Road when he was accosted by four suspects, two in possession of knives.

“They demanded the victim handover his car keys and cellphone. One suspect opened the door and tried to grab his cellphone. The victim reached for his firearm and shot at the suspect. The suspect sustained one gunshot wound to his stomach,” said Manqele.

“All suspects ran off and the injured one was transported by his friends to a nearby hospital where he was identified by the victim and then arrested,” added Manqele.

The arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon.
