11 year-old drowns in Inanda Dam incident

One child drowned at Inanda Dam and two were rescued by a bystander according to Hillcrest SAPS.

THE body of an 11 year old has been recovered by police divers at the Esikebheni area of Inanda dam after three children were swimming in the dam yesterday.

Divers returned this morning to where the three children were swimming in a gulley when they got into difficulty in long reeds and water lillies.

A bystander, rushed into the water to help the children.

He managed to pull two of the children into shallow water but sadly, the third child, the 11 year old, whose body was found this morning, drowned.

When called to the scene, the K9, Ghost conducted a surface search and identified an area that was confirmed by the witness.

Yesterday, a dive operation was conducted without any success. The divers’ efforts were severely frustrated by the extremely dense vegetation below the surface.

Hillcrest SAPS communication officer, Captain Linzi Smith said, “An inquest docket has been opened,” and urged communities to be careful and look after their children.

“Communities are to be aware of the whereabouts of their children at all times, especially around water,” she said.
