HIGHWAY Shellhole has called on residents to help refurbish its 15-tonne, 70-year-old tank.

The KwaZulu-Natal Parabat Veterans Organisation, who share the facilities of the Highway Shellhole, were behind the initiative to transport the tank to Hillcrest in 2018.

From 1940 to 1944, 12 500 of these American-built Stuart Light Tanks were used by the Allied forces in Europe, North Africa and the South Pacific.

At peak production, the workers at the American Car and Foundry in Pennsylvania manufactured 40 Stuart Light Tanks a day.

“We don’t want to get it up and running, but we do want to refurbish it. The Eshowe Shellhole was closing down as it did not have enough members. The tank was saved from the scrap heap and we want it to be here for a number of years,” said the Highway Shellhole’s deputy Old Bill, Craig Pitt.

The local Shellhole calls on residents with refurbishment knowledge, those who are willing to donate materials for the project and volunteers who will donate their time to help with the manual labour needed for the refurbishment.

“We are hoping to give it longevity and return it to its former glory. It is an attraction as there are many parents and their kids who drive past and want to have a look at it,” he said

The refurbishment will begin within the next two months.
