Bail hearing for men accused of Sandra Munsamy’s kidnapping postponed till March

One of the four accused who remain in custody in the Embongweni C-Max prison in Kokstad has reportedly abandoned his bail application.

ONE of the four men facing charges relating to the kidnapping of Westville mother and daughter of the owners of Crossmoor Transport has reportedly abandoned his application for bail due to there being existing warrants for his arrest in Mozambique.

Facing Magistrate Anand Maharaj at Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, the four men, accused of kidnapping Sandra Munsamy in May and holding her until she was found chained in a house in Mpumalanga in November last year, appeared on Tuesday, 25 February.

Police confirmed on Friday, 8 November that four men had been arrested, two in Gauteng, and two more in eMalahleni, after Munsamy’s six-month-long ordeal ended on the night of November 7 when police found her  during an operation by police in Witbank, also known as eMalahleni, in Mpumalanga.

Charge sheet

The four accused first appeared in a closed court room in Durban Magistrates’ Regional U Court in November last year.

At the time the Highway Mail reported they were facing six charges, including kidnapping, and attempted murder charges.

According to Gert Nel, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions for KZN National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the charge sheet had indicated the two counts of attempted murder related to two security officers, Neliswe Nxumalo and Andlie Mxolisi, who were shot at on May 30 during the kidnapping.

Remanded

“The matter  was postponed to 24 March for bail application,” said NPA spokesperson, Natasha Kara. Asked about the outstanding international warrants, Kara wasn’t able to shed much more light on what that might pertain to.

“All the prosecutor told me is that they have outstanding warrants from their home country, Mozambique,” said Kara on Thursday.
