Find perfect brew at Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust

Ubuntu Ground Cafe, based at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, is now open for business!

FIND your caffeine fix at the newly launched Ubuntu Ground Cafe at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT), 26 Old Main Road in Hillcrest.

It had an unofficial opening for one of the Beloved Long Runs at the end of January and has continued to pour out numerous steaming hot cups of the good stuff to patrons.

“It’s really nice to be open and invite the public in,” said a beaming Cwengi Mleya, the cafe’s manager.

While a full food menu option is not yet available, the drinks menu is a coffee addict’s dream. Expect cappuccinos, lattes, macchiatos and Afrikanos, to hot chocolate, teas, milkshakes, iced coffees and soft drinks. The opening special is R20 for all small coffee drinks and R25 for all large coffee drinks and will run until the end of February.

Ubuntu Ground Cafe is a social enterprise established by HACT as a response to youth unemployment in impoverished communities.

“We are a coffee shop and a skills development facility. We work to empower young people who have been excluded from work opportunities,” said Cwengi.

“We are a force for positive chance, a movement that is putting social entrepreneurship into the mainstream as a means to tackle youth unemployment and fight HIV/AIDS one espresso at a time.”

All profit generated from the cafe will go to the Adopt-a-Bed campaign that enables HACT to provide free healthcare to those who are in the advanced stages of AIDS or cancer. The cafe is open from 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday and on Saturday from 8am to 2pm.

There is a jungle gym available for children.
