Highway schools take precautions for planned water outage

Various schools in the highway area have taken precautions for the upcoming water outages tomorrow and Wednesday while some have opted to close.

THE two-day water outage affects everyone in the highway area, including schools that have to make contingency plans to cope with Durban’s heat and humidity at this time of year.

Some schools will be closing, which means parents who work have to make alternate arrangement for their children.

Various schools in the highway area have taken precautions for the upcoming water outages tomorrow and Wednesday.

Last week the city issued a press release advising consumers of a, “Western aqueduct water supply system interruption,” in which it outlined the planned shutdown for the entire affected system.

“The City would like to inform residents regarding a planned water shut down for the entire Western Aqueduct system on 18 February until 19 February,” said the press release issued by eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela.

John Wesley School in Pinetown has asked their learners to stay at home for the next two days.

“While we do have a water management system at school, it is not designed to deal with a total shutdown of water supply,” said Principal, Darren Tarr in a newsletter sent to parents. Tarr also highlighted the health risk factor.

“(Without water) the lack of sanitation is severe and we would be grossly negligent if we allowed our children and our staff members to be exposed to these risks.”

Winston Park Primary will close early on Tuesday with the Junior Primary closing at 12.15pm and the Senior Primary at 12.30pm.
“We do not have a sufficient water supply in our tanks and, therefore, school will be closed for all children on Wednesday,” said principal, Elaine David in a statement sent to parents.
Curro Hillcrest has ordered a water tank for each campus as a precaution. Toilets will be cleaned and hygienic parents were informed in a newsletter that also asked them “…to be mindful of sending their children to school with additional drinking water.”
Kloof Pre-Primary School has asked their children to bring an extra 2-litre bottle of water. “Please do also bring extra drinking water or juice for snack and lunchtimes,” stated its newsletter to parents.
Thomas Moore College is said to be prepared with JoJo tanks and has taken all precautions. School will go on as planned for them.
St Mary’s DSG’s classes will go on as planned and urged the girls to bring their own drinking water and hand sanitisers. “Water will be available at your disposable all around the school,” said a statement sent out to the parents and the gala will go on as planned for Wednesday evening.
Hillcrest Primary will be closed for both days much to the dismay of a parent, who did not want to be named.
She said: “I can’t lie, I am so irritated, our school, Hillcrest Primary is closing this week – Tuesday at 9.30am and Wednesday all day due to the notice of no water in the Upper Highway area.
“Should we not send our children to school on Tuesday from 7.30am to 9.30am, it will be marked as an absent day, which is ridiculous,” said the irritated parent.
“No consideration for working parents. We have been told that if we can’t keep the children at home or fetched by 9.30am, then they will be supervised.  The thing is, if I choose to send my children to school they won’t be educated on those days and they will forever hold it against me as they would be one of only a few leaarners there.”
