Berea West Prep embraces new principal

Cindy Geldenhuys was passed the torch to lead the local school in December last year.

EQUIPPED with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the education sphere, Cindy Geldenhuys was officially welcomed as the principal of Berea West Preparatory School in December last year.

She studied her B-ed through Unisa and completed her honours for inclusive education and is currently pursuing her masters in psychology of education, focussing on parents support needs.

Her teaching career kicked off at Stepping Stone’s Pre-Primary School, and she moved on to Ashley Primary School, Westvillle Junior Primary School and then held a post at Birdwood School, based at the Sherwood Children’s Centre, for three years.

It has only been a few weeks since she took up the leadership post at the local school and the learners already affectionately know her as ‘Mrs G’.

“Every child is so unique and each child has so much more to them. The part I play is to find the uniqueness in each and every child and then bring that out,” said a smiling Cindy.

Her plans for the school are to introduce robotics and coding, in an attempt to bridge education to the 21st century.

“Learners will have a chance to work with the technological advancements happening around us. At first it will be an extra-curricular activity,” said Cindy.

“We are also hoping to increase our sports participation and we have already started a cricket academy, hopefully to find the next Protea players!”

“I want to encourage my learners to lead a healthy lifestyle, develop social skills and holistically encircle each child. It is a huge thing for me that we really develop each child,” she said.

She wholeheartedly believes she has been blessed with the position due to the great staff at the school.

“There is a good work ethic here, the people are phenomenal and I am surrounded by such a wonderful team. I’ve really just inherited a beautiful school,” said Cindy.

Her other hopes are to see the school, its staff and learners become intrinsically involved with the community.

As a full-time working mom of two, with one child in matric and the other in college, Cindy is also a loving wife and studies on the side. It came as no surprise to learn there was not much time left over in a day for her to hold down any hobbies.

“I do find the time to bullet journal but when we are not busy, as a family, we head off to the bush to find wildlife and feel the green grass under our feet,” said Cindy.
