Westville charity shop ‘treasures’ its first birthday

The local charity shop, Hidden Treasures, made its first birthday wish and the next 365 days will see if it proves to become a reality.

VOLUNTEERS, supporters and donors gathered to celebrate the Hidden Treasures charity shop’s first birthday earlier this month.

To earmark the special day, each one of the store’s 24 volunteers, beneficiaries as well as the owners and staff from the surrounding stores at the Salamanca Centre in Westville, were invited over for a slice of cake.

The non-profit organisation forms part of a national chain of charity shops, and the Westville branch – the only one in KwaZulu-Natal – opened its doors in February last year.

“The store has been doing extremely well, thanks to the community at large. The community has embraced us and there are new customers coming in every day. So many positive comments come in from each person who visits,” said the overseer of the store, Rona Austwick.

The biggest seller in the store, apart from clothing, is the electronics. “People are constantly coming through to see what new goods we have been donated and have unpacked,” she smiled.

While there is already a team of 24 volunteers, the ideal number is 30.

“The more hands we have, the tidier and nicer the store will look. It’s such a positive, friendly atmosphere and everyone is happy when they come here. It’s like working in a real-life 7de Laan – minus the drama,” laughed Sarie Snow, one of the volunteers. “We are all just so close to each other.”

The shop is in need of children’s clothing, small men’s clothing as well as toys. It is open from 9am to 5pm from Monday to Friday, and on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. Contact 074 816 0001.
