Northdene armed robbery victim to be honoured in cycle ride

Charlie Van Heerden's Pitbull, Hunter was also shot in the incident while trying to protect his owner from the armed suspects.

A MEMORIAL cycle from Durban to uMhlanga will commemorate and celebrate the life of Charlie Van Heerden, who was tragically shot in his Northdene home during an armed robbery last week.

Cyclists will set off from Bike and Bean at 6am on Saturday, 8 February.

Led by Van Heerden’s son, Deno Van Heerden, the cyclists will head to uMhlanga in convoy and circle back.

“He cycled and there’s a massive community that knew him. He played a huge role in many people’s lives. It’s tragic that he was suddenly taken from us. This is a way that we can get together and celebrate his life,” said Deno.

Van Heerden died in hospital on Friday, 31 January after he was shot during an armed robbery at his home in Northdene on Friday, 30 January.

The shooting made headlines as it came to light that Van Heerden’s pitbull, Hunter was also shot in the incident while trying to protect his owner from the armed suspects. Hunter is reportedly doing well.

The memorial cycle is open to the community and all are welcome to join, said Deno.
