Still a no-go for Go!Durban

The much anticipated Go!Durban bus project has been delayed numerous times and there has been no response from authorities on the matter.

THE glaring white elephants that is the GO! Durban project’s bus ranks, expected to be opened in September last year (after many other opening dates came and went), stand empty.

In a story published on the Highway Mail website on 27 June 2019, it read: “According to the eThekwini Transport Authority, the estimated total budget for all the project phases is R20 billion over a period of about 10 years.

“The Go!Live date was missed because of at least six protracted work stoppages which resulted in delays in infrastructure delivery; delays in Supply Chain Management (SCM) processes as well as negotiations with both minibus taxi and bus industry structures.”

The Highway Mail has published numerous stories regarding the estimated route opening, followed by reports of delay upon delay with many disruptions and inconvenience caused for motorists, residents and business owners.

The brand, Go!Durban, an integrated rapid public transport network (IRPTN) was introduced way back in 2013.

The first GO!Durban prototype station structure at the intersection of Regent Street and Qashana Khuzwayo Roads in New Germany was completed in 2017.

The Highway Mail and its readers want to know why this billion-Rand transport system remains dormant? Despite many requests for updates, no-one has responded to the numerous emails for answers.

Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC, marketing and communications manager, Lucian Naidoo, said the Durban Chamber will not comment at this stage as they will be hosting an information sharing session to unpack the status of the project at the Western Area Forum.
