#FieldsHillCrash: Sanele May released from prison

The truck driver involved in the Field's Hill accident that claimed the lives of 24 people, was released after being imprisoned for more than five years.

SANELE May, the truck driver involved in the crash that claimed the lives of 24 people on Field’s Hill on Thursday, 5 September 2013, was released from prison today.

Peach Piche, an admin on the Sanele May Support Group on Facebook, made the announcement on the page three hours ago.

“The day we have all been waiting for has arrived. There are no words to describe the elation and he even admitted this morning that it feels like a dream,” she said.

May spent 14 months in police custody before he received his sentence.

On Friday, 28 November, 2014, May pleaded guilty to the 31 counts against him. The charges included 24 counts of culpable homicide, an illegal foreigner, fraud, the possession of a fake certificate and public driving permit, operating a vehicle without a valid professional driving permit and failure to comply with road traffic signs.

On Tuesday, 6 June 2017, Gregory Govender, the owner of the trucking company, Sagekal Logistics, was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment or a fine of R25 000 at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.

In her Facebook post, Piche went on to thank each person who supported May’s journey, through financial contributions, visits, messages and prayers.

“The families are also constantly in our thoughts and we wish them continuous healing as they hold onto the beautiful memories of loved ones who were taken too soon,” said Piche.

“This is the end of what has been a very challenging chapter and it’s time for Sanele to write a new one!”
