Cellphone thief arrested in Pinetown

Police officers who witnessed the incident gave chase and the suspect was arrested a few metres away from the incident.

PINETOWN police arrested a 36-year old suspect who allegedly robbed a motorist of his cellphone in the Pinetown CBD on Monday (20 January) afternoon.

It is alleged the victim (37) was driving his vehicle along Crompton Street, and when he approached the traffic light, an unknown man put his hand inside the vehicle, through a window that was half open, and stole a cellphone before fleeing the scene.

“The Pinetown Rapid Response who witnessed the incident gave chase and the suspect was apprehended a few metres away from the scene. The stolen cellphone was recovered and handed back to the rightful owner,” said Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele.

The arrested suspect will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court today (21 January).
