Armed robbers flee with cash from New Germany liquor shop

Shop owners in the area feel there is not enough police presence in the area and believe crime will decrease if there is visible policing.

STAFF at a local liquor shop are still in shock after they were forced to lay on the ground during an armed robbery this afternoon (16 January).

Three armed robbers entered the shop in New Germany, held the cashier at gun point and instructed her to empty out a till.

An undisclosed amount of money was taken and the robbers fled the scene.

According the shop’s assistant manager, who did not want to be named, there have been numerous robberies at the shop, including one in December where he was injured on his head during the ordeal.

Meanwhile, a convenience store, not far from the liquor shop, was also targeted last Tuesday, 7 January.

“Six men entered the shop, pushed us all to the ground and ordered the cashiers to empty the till,” said owner Peter Gavriel.

The robbers got away with cash, cigarettes and a cell phone.

Both shops feel that there is not enough police presence in the area and believe crime will decrease if there is visible policing.

Both matters have been reported to the police.
