Westville couple share their love story

Ken and Hazel Bramley celebrated 60 years of happy marriage.

KEN Bramley’s gesture of bringing back a puppy as a gift for his crush, Hazel, worked in his favour as after 60 years, the couple are still happily married.

The Westville couple met through Hazel’s cousin who was friends with Ken.

“I grew up on a farm in Margate and my parents sent me to a boarding school at St Mary’s in Kloof at the age of eight. When I finished school I trained as a nurse in Addington and I stayed with my three boy cousins on Florida Road, Durban,” said Hazel.

Hazel said they started out as friends as they would go as a group of friends with a bakkie to the beach on Sundays.

“One day he bought two tickets and asked me to go and watch a movie and I said ‘no’ after he got stood up by a girl he was suppose to go with. He then turned around and said ‘one day I will marry you’,” said Hazel.

Ken who was a plumber got a contract to work for a year in another city but only worked for six months. “I cut it short and had to come back for her. She was so lovely and a very pretty girl,” said Ken.

Hazel said when Ken returned, he was so good looking, “he was carrying a puppy, he looked so cute, I couldn’t resist.”

Ken proposed to Hazel on New Year’s Eve. “I couldn’t go home on those holidays as there were collapsed bridges due to floods so Ken decided to propose.”

The couple advised young couples to talk about their problems. “We do things together and we have never fought about money.”

They have three children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
