#MatricResults: Will my matric marks get me into university?

THE last few days have been filled with joy and excitement for many matriculants around South Africa as they found out they had passed.

The Department of Basic Education minister, Angie Motshekga announced that the class of 2019 made history with the highest pass rate ever in South Africa, which was 81.3 per cent – an increase from the 78.2 per cent in the previous year.

The minimum requirements to get a National Senior Certificate (NSC) are 40 per cent in three subjects, one of which is an official language at Home Language level and 30 per cent in three other subjects.

But is that enough to get into university?

According to the Department of Basic Education’s website, if you would like to obtain a Higher Certificate, the minimum admission requirement is a NSC with a minimum of 30 per cent in the Home Language as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council.

To study towards a Diploma, the minimum admission requirement is a NSC with a minimum of 30 per cent in the Home Language, coupled with an achievement rating of three (Moderate Achievement, 40 per cent – 49 per cent) or better in four recognised 20-credit subjects.

For a Bachelor’s Degree, the minimum admission requirement is a NSC with a minimum of 30 per cent in your Home Language, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50 per cent – 59 cent) or better in four recognised 20-credit subjects.

“Institution and programme needs may require additional combinations of recognised NSC subjects and levels of achievement,” stated the Department of Basic Education.
