Chanderdeo was with his wife, daughter and grandson when they were followed by four men, one armed with a screwdriver.

Chanderdeo and his wife were assaulted and robbed of a cellphone.

“We were followed and surrounded as we crossed the road. When I saw the screwdriver I stepped back and was pushed down. Three males were in the front and the one in the back grabbed my phone and all ran into the crowd. People and motorists going by did not bother to get involved or help,” he said.

His wife was pushed to the ground, injuring her knee.

“She could hardly walk and was assisted by two people from [a local healthcare organisation] who noticed what was happening. I was also injured on the neck,” said Chanderdeo.

Chanderdeo who is also a former police officer urged people to avoid Pinetown Home Affairs and also to report crimes.

“My advice is avoid Pinetown and if you go to Durban be prepared to pay the security guards to give you a number, travel further out or go in big groups or even go armed.”

Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Cpt Bongumusa Manqele confirmed that crime is on the increase in the area, and said they are trying everything in their power to curb crime.

“We would also like to appeal to the members of the community to be vigilant when driving or walking next to intersections especially from Crompton Street up to Anderson and Josiah Gumede Road,” he said.
