Bittersweet farewell for principal

While the founder of the pre-primary phase heads into retirement after 31 years at Kainon School, a new principal has taken up the mantle.

KAINON School’s pre-primary phase principal, Daphne Plüg, retired from her position after 31 years of passionate headship.

In 1989, Daphne began Kainon Pre-Primary to provide a service addressing the increasing need for early childhood development (ECD) and care, as economic demands meant many mothers needed to return to the workplace.

With a handful of children at her knee, in the corner of Westville New Church Hall, Daphne began her absolute passion to teach and nurture children.

Kainon Pre-Primary flourished under her loving care and soon the group’s numbers had grown to such an extent that it was split into three groups, then four and then Grade R.

The groups spread into corners of the church hall and foyer. Once they were old enough, the children then moved into the existing Grade One phase at Kainon Primary. A few years later, funding allowed for a beautiful and modern pre-primary building to be designed and built on the premises of New Church Westville and Kainon Primary School.

Over the past 31 years, Daphne has passionately nurtured and cared for hundreds of children and their parents in a selfless manner. She has ensured the needs of the children were met and protected and that their parents were supported and sensitively guided in their parenting.

Fiona Oldacre, who has a passion for education, will be taking up the position as pre-primary phase principal.

She has been involved in tertiary education and recently, at Embury College, developed the equally passionate foundation phase and ECD teachers.

Fiona strongly believes in empowering teachers with the knowledge and confidence needed to meet the diverse needs of South African classrooms.
