Illegal dumping in Mariannridge raises concern

THE continued illegal dumping in Mariannridge is a cause of concern said the DA PR councillor for wards 13 and 15, Marlaine Nair.

“Some residents are leaving their trash out a week before the DSW truck is scheduled to pick up the refuse without being concerned about whether the refuse is rotting in the heat of the day or being washed down the streets in the rain,” said a concerned Nair.

“This is a terribly unhygienic state of affairs as the rotting refuse only means an increase in flies and airborne diseases. Ultimately, residents who are not disposing of waste in the proper manner are contributing to harming themselves and their communities.”

Nair urged residents to dispose of waste in a proper manner.

“We must aim to put the least amount of waste into black bin bags and attempt to recycle and reuse much of our waste as possible. The eThekwini Municipality has a huge problem with insufficient landfill space.Vegetable and fruit peels, as well as meat and other left over food, should ideally be buried,” she said.

Nair wrote to the City and asked for skips to be provided to residents living in flats and certain informal settlements.

“Residents must commit to acting responsibly and disposing of waste in a manner that does not harm the environment and other residents,” said Nair.

The eThekwini Municipality did not respond to questions by the time of going to print.
