Summertime safety tips for your little one

To help you enjoy the holiday season, Huggies® South Africa has put together the perfect summertime guide for fun in the sun with your little one.

The South African sun can be very harsh on hot summer days which is why it is essential to keep your little ones protected. Here are some safety tips to help protect your child:

Sun safety

• Invest in swimsuits and hats that have UPF+ protection. This will offer your little one even more protection from the sun.
• We all know how we lose track of time, and often forget to reapply sunscreen, when out playing on the beach or in the pool. So set sunscreen application reminders on your phone throughout the day to help you remember to reapply.
• If you have a little one, it is a great idea to invest in a small pop up tent. This provides a safe, shady spot for your little one to take a nap in, while at the beach or pool.

Being at the pool or the beach is often a bit overwhelming for your little ones, especially when it is very hot, so make their experience a little more comfortable.

Comfort

• Make sure your little one is water ready and wearing their Huggies® Little Swimmers. These are specially designed swim nappies that don’t swell in water like normal nappies do. They have been designed with stretchy side material and easy-open sides that ensure a great fit for your little one in or out of the water. Huggies® Little Swimmers has added leak protection to ensure that there aren’t any little accidents.
• Beach sand can be the source of many teary moments for your little ones. It sticks to their skin and sometimes causes irritation and discomfort. One way to manage this is to keep baby powder on hand. When on the beach, dust the baby powder on the hands and feet of your little ones. The baby powder removes the moisture on the skin allowing the sand to be easily dusted off.
• Keep your little one cool and comfortable. You can do this by taking them swimming in the pool or the sea, or you can wet some facecloths and freeze them the night before.  Pack them in a ziplock bag and place them in your cooler box to keep cold when going to the beach or pool. If your little one gets too hot and is uncomfortable, you can take out the cold cloth and place it on them to cool them down. These also work wonders for messy hands and faces.

Enjoy the little moments

• Capture those special moments. Having a little one is an opportunity to experience everything again. Capture their first swim in the sea, their first sandcastle or them playing on the step with their friends or learning to float.
• Create an experience for your little one. The beach is filled with sensory elements and is perfect for sensory play. Gather shells together, build a sandcastle and watch your little one explore the new textures and sensations. Similarly, at the pool, get some fun sensory pool toys, let them squish cold watermelon in their hands and play and splash in the water.
• Enjoy your time together. Your little one is not going to be little forever, so make sure you enjoy these moments that you get to spend together in the water and the sunshine.
