Computer thefts at Hillcrest Post Office causes hassle for motorists

The SA Post Office advised Hillcrest motorists to renew their vehicle licenses at the Kloof Post Office or at Pine Crest Centre.

IT has been eight months since computers were stolen from the Hillcrest Post Office one of which was used for the renewal of motor vehicle licences.

A resident who inquired about the reason the post office could no longer renew their motor vehicles licence anymore was told the eNatis computer was stolen during a robbery in March.

“When asking the employee why it had not been replaced I was told, ‘the Department of Transport does not want to get another computer’,” said Frank Kihn.

Kihn said that what he found mind-boggling was that he has a letter dated 10 April 2018 in his possession from the Communication Division of the Post Office in which it states that they had applied to the Department of Transport for an extra eNatis computer for this post office.

“So the Hillcrest Postmaster obviously believed a year and a half ago that they needed two computers for licence renewals but now that their one and only machine has been stolen, the Department of Transport has decided not to replace it,” said Kihn.

SA Post Office KZN regional general manager, Martin Coetsee, said the eNatis computers, used for car licence renewals, are the property of the Department of Transport and so the department has the right to decide where these computers will be deployed.

“In the meantime, the SA Post Office would like to point out that a car licence renewal service is available at the Kloof Post Office branch which is about 6km away from Hillcrest Post Office as well as the post office at the Pine Crest Centre.”

Coetsee added that customers will be interested to know that if they did not receive a renewal form for their car licence, they can download the form from postoffice.co.za (click on domestic products, then choose motor vehicle licences) and fill it in before they visit a convenient post office.
