Baptist Church steps onto ‘Home Ground’

WESTVILLE Baptist Church unveiled its new look on Sunday, 24 November.

The church will now be known as Home Ground, Westville Baptist Church.

Highway Baptist Church was established in December 1963. With just 70 people gathering in a member’s home, it soon grew and it was decided to build a church.

In 1968, the church was built in Westville central where the BP garage is now situated. In the 1990s, the church was renamed Westville Baptist Church and in 2001 it moved to the current building opposite the Westville SPAR.

“A lot of transformation over the years has brought us to a new and exciting crossroads – we’re going to be called something else,” said pastor John Benn.

Benn said while the name of the church will remain Westville Baptist Church, they will now be known as Home Ground.

When asked why Home Ground? Benn said: “The word ‘home’ holds significant meaning for us; the word ‘home’ speaks about way more than a building or a physical location. It speaks about a place where you are accepted, loved and recognised.

“We want our church to function like a home, to feel like a home and love like a home,” he said.

Benn added that the word ‘ground’ reminds everyone to continue to grow in their relationship with God. “Regardless of where we are in that journey, we desire for everyone to be planted in Him; and rooted in His love,” he said.
