Kloof resident aims to sterilize 50 dogs for her 50th

Lea Kassner is working alongside the upper highway based, Sanctuary Project.

KLOOF local, Lea Kassner, has set herself the target of raising enough funds to sterilize 50 dogs for her 50th birthday.

Kassner, who runs a bread and breakfast, InnAfrika, in Kloof, takes pride in the charitable work she’s doing and wants to make a small difference.

“I do realise I cannot save them all but I can make a difference to that one dog or cat. I cannot explain the satisfaction and feeling I got seeing those animals coming in to be sterilized. It’s amazing. From the vets who give of their time and all the volunteers. People are just amazing!” said the animal lover.

Kassner works hand-in-hand with the Sanctuary Project, a non-profit Upper Highway based rescue and rehabilitation depot for canines, cats and other wild animals.

The Sanctuary Project founded the #50fifty project two years ago and has organised the sterilization of more than 50 dogs and cats in an effort to control rampant breeding of domestic animals.

The organisation wants to sterilize 2 025 domestic pets by the year 2025.

“We have done one project so far in the valley of 1000 Hills where the Sanctuary Project sterilized just over 200 dogs and cats,” saidys Kassner, who also mentioned that the next big project will be in March next year.

Kassner recognises the importance of sterilization.

“I have always been passionate about sterilization as I believe we have to start at the route of stopping unwanted animals but not everyone can afford to sterilize their pets.”

Kassner has raised about R16 000 with all funds going to the Mpophemeni Sterilisation Clinic in March next year.

Kassner will be celebrating her birthday on January, 2.
