Large fabric donation gives project a lift

Another way Woza Moya helps to raise funds and empower others is through its on-site haberdashery.

THE Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust’s (HACT’s) haberdashery received a welcome boost last week thanks to a large donation of fabric from local corporate and promotional clothing company, Colbar Clothing.

The industrious project, that falls under the centre’s award-winning Woza Moya programme, first opened its doors to the public almost two years ago and has been helping to generate much-needed income for the centre’s various skills training and economic empowerment initiatives.

HACT’s haberdashery supervisor, Verna Walker, explained that the haberdashery was the latest in a long list of initiatives set-up by the centre to address the high rates of poverty and unemployment in the Valley of 1000 Hills.

“Thanks to the ongoing support of our community, and companies such as Colbar Clothing, we are thrilled that our little haberdashery is proving very successful,” said Verna. “Partnerships like this are a win-win for all involved, including our team of local volunteers who help us run our Habby and serve our many customers on a daily basis.”

Colbar Clothing’s financial director, Roland Hansen said, “Verna and her team of volunteers are doing amazing work in our community and we are so happy to have made a contribution towards this project. Having visited the centre, I’m really impressed with HACT’s vision and the positive impact that project’s like the haberdashery are having. At Colbar, we believe in giving back to the community and look forward to continuing our relationship with HACT.”

The haberdashery is open five days a week from 8.30am to 12.30pm and is situated at the HACT Centre, 26 Old Main Road, Hillcrest. Contact HACT’s Woza Moya team on 031 765 5866 or email wozahabby@hillaids.org.za.
