KLOOF Senior Primary School’s SPAR Star of the Month is Leah Edwards.
She only took up running as a sport half way through Grade 4 and her first event was the Nelson Mandela trail run with her dad. Leah’s training only started at the end of that year with RunTech.
She worked hard during her training sessions and continuously shaved off time on each of her trail runs. This year has been a turning point for Leah’s running and much of this is due to her new coach, Jane Brown, from Pacer, and the awesome support from her family, especially her dad, who is a runner himself. Leah had a great school cross-country season with a few podium finishes.
She ran the Nelson Mandela Trail Run and placed third in the women’s section, following her second place the year before.
Leah ran cross-country league races on Saturdays where repeated good performances resulted in her being selected for the KZN team. She went on to compete at the SA Champs in Pretoria in September.
Since then, she has competed in the Charity Challenge with her team mates from the Kearsney Striders and supported CHOC, Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa – Durban.
She has done a few KZN Trail Runs recently and has claimed a spot on the podium in each event.
She took second place in the women’s category in the Eston Trail Run 5km, second place in the Rocky Bay Trail Run 6km and was the first woman in Blythedale Trail Run 6km and was third overall.
Leah loves her running and is always doing club time trials and Parkruns on top of her training. She also loves playing hockey and works hard at her academics.
