PICS: Local hospital shines light on trauma

World Trauma Day emphasises the importance of saving and protecting a life during the most critical moments and preparing and applying critical measures to deal with and avoid trauma fatalities.

TO commemorate World Trauma Day, Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital hosted organisations that deal with trauma related issues for an educational day on Thursday, 17 October.

“This day is mainly to celebrate the staff who are dedicated to saving lives,” said event coordinator, Johan De Kock.

According to specialist intensivists, Dr Dave Skinner and Michael Faurie, there is no easy solution in preventing trauma. “When it comes to trauma, time is of the essence as the faster you get treatment the better the outcome.

“Trauma is a big problem in small income communities like the ones that surround the hospital,” said Skinner.

“A lot of trauma is caused by interpersonal violence but we are also moving into a season where snake bites are more frequent and people should be more vigilant and seek medical care speedily,” said Faurie.

Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital recently started treating snake bites.
