MS Society receives much-needed boost

Compass Medical Waste in Westville recently made a R10 000 donation to help boost the NPO's coffers.

AFTER the Highway Mail encouraged residents to support the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society KZN, which is facing the devastating possibility of closing, Compass Medical Waste Services donated R10 000 to the organisation.

Charmaine Stoner, the PA to Compass MD, Ian du Randt, has been impacted by this life-long disease that affects the central nervous system. Her sister, Laura Gunston, was diagnosed 15 years ago and deteriorated dramatically two years ago. Through the MS Society’s social worker, Dhamarai Pillay, she was placed as a permanent resident at Hillcrest Hospital.

“My family and I are so grateful to the society for their support over the years. We didn’t know who to turn to and they were so helpful, patient and understanding,” explained Charmaine.

MS is an autoimmune disease where the body’s own immune system starts destroying the myelin sheaf that protects the nerve fibres and creates multiple lesions and or scars on the brain, resulting in message flow disruptions from the brain to the rest of the body.

Compass urges more businesses and individuals to come forward and provide support to the NPO that spends R10 000 a month subsidising adult nappies for families who cannot afford it, as well as R6 400 per month for a part-time support social worker. All other organisational expenses such as petrol, stationery, computers, phone are funded by the committee of volunteers.
