Pinetown children protest against cell towers

The pre-primary school learners held a protest against the possible installation of two cellphone towers near their school in Sarnia.

ONE hundred and ten Birches Pre-Primary School learners hosted a march with brightly coloured signs in the cul-de-sac in Oribi Crescent to protest the installation of cellphone towers near their school.

“We are not against technology, we need it,” said the principal of Birches Pre-Primary School, Scilla Edmonds. “We just want the cellphone towers to be placed more responsibly, away from schools.”

Emma Kelly, of Stop 5G South Africa, the Durban Anti-Cell Mast Alliance and Children of Earth, applauded the children’s efforts.

“It is really difficult to mobilise grown-ups on this issue, so to see children getting behind the cause is really something special,” she said.

The whole group chanted, “no cellphone towers near school!” and held signs that read, ‘say no to cellphone towers’ and ‘plant flowers not towers’.

One child wore a tinfoil hat and many children proudly waved the South African flag.
