1 dead, 3 injured in N3 Shongweni collision

The three occupants of the truck were treated at the scene.

A MAN was killed and three others injured when a truck collided with a car on the N3 northbound, before the Shongweni interchange, this morning.

Paramedics arrived at the scene at about 5.30am.

Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said, “The [motorist] that was travelling Durban-bound on the N3 somehow lost control [of the truck] and veered through the medium and collided with a Hyundai i10 before veering out of control and  down an embankment.”

“Unfortunately, the driver of the i10, believed to be a male in his 40s, had sustained significant injuries in the collision. Unfortunately there was nothing more the paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene,” he added.

Jamieson said the three occupants from the truck sustained only minor injuries and he confirmed that they had been treated on the scene. However, he said, they refused to be transported to a nearby hospital.

“At this stage, the events leading up to the collision are unknown, however, SAPS are in attendance and will be investigating further,” added Jamieson.

The collision had severely affected traffic on the N3, and Jamieson confirmed that the road had been cleared at around 8.30am.
