Waste not the recyclable material

KwaShembe informal settlements residents were taught the importance of recycling and taking care of their surroundings.

NOT every bit of waste needs to go to the landfill sites as much of it can be recycled. This was one of the lessons shared with people staying in the KwaShembe informal settlements, Clermont.

The Aller River Pilot Project, together with DSW, European Disposables and Nonwovens Association (Edana), Green Corridor Cefas and the ward committee, hosted a cleanup on Friday to teach people to love their surroundings.

The theme of the day was ‘Thanda Indawo Yakho’ (love your area) and, during the hot morning, many bags of litter were collected in the area.

ARPP community liaison officer, Thozeka Letuka, said they separated the waste they collected to show people that there is litter that needs to be recycled and that can actually make money.

“We continued preaching our verse of correctly disposing nappies. There are bins around this area where people can dispose of their nappies, but during the cleanup there were still nappies found dumped around the area.

“People need to understand that the nappies that are regularly dumped in and next to the river, in open spaces and in toilets, lead to blocked sewers and harmful sewage spillages,” said Letuka.

She added there are so many beautiful things that can be done with other waste material such as plastics.

“We even showed them a dress and handbags made of plastics,” said Letuka, who thanked everyone who participated in the cleanup.
