DA members clean up heritage sites

Ward 18 councillor, Melanie Brauteseth urged people to recycle and report illegal dumping.

FOR Heritage Day, DA councillors and members for Wards 18, 24 and 92 held cleanups at heritage and conservation sites.

The first stop was the heritage site in Cowies Hill.

The site has a beautiful water fountain and is used by runners during the Comrades and on a daily basis.

It is known by community members as the Comrades fountain or the Cowies Hill viewpoint and it looks over the Paradise Valley area.

“The second site is a spot that borders the Roosfontein Reserve in the Dawncliffe area and a number of residents stopped to express the concern of constant dumping at that spot,” said ward 18 councillor, Melanie Brauteseth.

Brauteseth said the sign that indicates the spot as part of a conservation area had broken off.

“We temporarily tied it back up and we have requested that the sign be fixed.”

She said their biggest concern was the amount of recycling they collected. “Out of around 20 bags of rubbish we collected, more than half were full of recyclable materials.”

The recycling material collected was given to one of their members who runs a small recycling business in Clermont.

“We urge all residents of the Inner West to recycle and contribute to keeping our suburbs clean. We need to keep our heritage sites, open spaces and general community clean,” added DA PR councillor, Caelee Laing.

Residents can report illegal dumping to eservices@durban.gov.za or to 031 311 8804.
