Gillitts Primary builds a brighter future for its learners

The construction of the new Grade R classroom at Gillitts Primary School will be competed before the end of 2019.

UNDER the direct leadership of its charismatic, dedicated and passionate principal, Arti Jadoo, Gillitts Primary School has continued to flourish and grow.

The new addition of a dedicated Grade R classroom is testament to her commitment to its learners and the parent body.

The school first opened its doors in 1953 in the Stockville valley on two acres of land, donated by the VN Naik family.

Under Arti’s guidance, the school has undergone constant upgrades and forms of upliftment in all spheres of learning.

Nirvasha Govender, a past learner at the school and now the Grade R educator, said each year there are approximately 30 learners per grade on the waiting list for admission.

“Due to the limited classroom space, many parents are forced to admit their children elsewhere, with the minimal funding received from the Department of Education, upgrading and improving our learning environment is a tedious task. The principal, educators and school governing body take on the challenge themselves to improve on and create a meaningful learning environment through fund-raising, collections donations and sponsors,” said Nirvasha.

The inception of the Grade R wing at the school began in 2018 and the construction started on 5 August this year.

“Coming from previously restricted room space, movement in the classroom was very limited. This added facility will be equipped with necessary learning space as well as enough room for learners to interact during indoor and outdoor play,” said Nirvasha.

There are plans to include a vegetable garden as well as a recycling unit.

Neighbouring schools are encouraged to donate old toys, teaching aids and books.

Arti Jadoo said, “Despite our various challenges, I believe that when you take the first step with authenticity, providence moves forward too. I humbly appeal to local residents to make monetary contributions to our project so that our children can have a beautiful classroom.”
