Renowned conservationist and author gives talk in Kloof

Dr Gus Mills will deliver a talk with slides entitled Kalahari Kaleidoscope at the Kloof Junior Primary School Hall.

THE Friends of Kloof Library are delighted and honored to have world renowned carnivore biologist, academic, conservationist and author, Dr Gus Mills, deliver a talk with slides entitled Kalahari Kaleidoscope, on Tuesday, 1 October at 6pm at the Kloof Junior Primary School Hall.

Gus has done research on African carnivores for more than 40 years with SANParks, stationed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and the Kruger National Park.

His major studies include behavioural ecology of brown hyaenas and spotted hyaenas in the Kalahari and lion and cheetah feeding ecology, ecological relationships between the large carnivores and wild dog population ecology in Kruger National Park.

Gus retired from SANParks and in 2006 took up a position as a Research Fellow at the Lewis Foundation, South Africa. He returned to the scorching red dunes of the Kalahari to do a pivotal cheetah study.

The results have been published in a book, Kalahari Cheetahs: adaptations to an arid region.

Dr Mills has published six books and 120 scientific papers. Books on sale at the talk will be: Hyaena Nights and Kalahari Days – R215, Kalahari Guide Book – R200, Kalahari cheetahs: adaptations to an arid region (scientific book) R500 and Birders’ Guide to Africa R450 ( by Dr Mills’ son).
