Hillcrest couple celebrate 65th anniversary

Stanley and Jean Adams got married on 18 September 1954.

STANLEY Adams once told his wife, Jean that she would never catch him in ‘one of those’, pointing at an aeroplane, but a shipping job offer he could not refuse, saw him pack his belongings and fly to South Africa.

The Hillcrest couple, who will be celebrating their 65th anniversary on Wednesday, 18 September, moved from London in 1970 and said that was the best decision they made as they have had many wonderful years in SA and do not see themselves relocating to any other country.

The lovebirds met at a dancing place in London.

“Dancing was a thing in those days, that very first day I was very taken by Jean and asked to see her again after taking her to a bus stop,” said Stanley.

Jean said she was with a friend when she saw Stanley and his brother and friends coming in.

“I told my friend that there were new chaps coming in as it was my first time seeing them.”

Stanley’s brother asked Jean to dance with him, “he was asking me too many questions and I thought he was cheeky and nosy,” smiled Jean.

“When Stanley asked me to dance with him, I liked him, he was tall and had this mop of hair,” she said.

Stanley said it was just love at first sight, “she was tall, well dressed and a very lovely girl. We got married two years after we met and we have one daughter, Linda and two grandchildren.”

The couple who share the same interests said they have been very blessed to live so long and be able to celebrate their 65th anniversary.

“We have had a beautiful life and we will share our day surrounded our family and friends,” said Jean.

Their recipe for a long lasting relationship is never keeping secrets from one another. Now that they can not drive long distances, Jean and Stanley enjoy going to Watercrest Mall which is closer to them. “We go shopping together, we love movies and eating out. My wife is the rich one and she pays for everything,” joked Stanley while patting his wife’s hand.
