Women urged to speak out

Phakamisa Organisation, one of the missions of the Pinetown Methodist Church, walked around the streets of Pinetown to voice their concerns and say 'enough is enough'.

IN light of the recent events surrounding gender-based violence, the xenophobic attacks, the femicide in South Africa, Phakamisa Organisation, one of the missions of the Pinetown Methodist Church, hosted a campaign to break the silence.

Director of Phakamisa, Thokozani Poswa, said their aim was to raise awareness and show that they are part of this struggle and to plead with people to stop abuse.

“We have named this campaign ‘Blow the Whistle’ urging women to speak out and not die in silence. A whistle has a very irritating sound if you continue blowing it, someone is surely to answer,” said Poswa.

She said they were impressed by the outcome and the motorists who supported them along their routes. “They were hooting, they showed that they understand what we were doing and feel strongly about these attacks. “Poswa said what touched her heart during the campaign was when she gave a man a pamphlet about gender-based violence and he said: ‘In the name of men, we apologise’.

“It meant that we have done something right. She urged women to stop oppressing one another and stand as one.

“Women should beware of the things they share on social media. It was so sad to hear a record of a woman justifying the murder of Wyebank four siblings.

How can a woman make excuses for the alleged murder? At least the children are resting in peace, but their mother will carry that pain forever as that man killed that mother’s soul.”
