Cigarette business owner kills armed robber in Pinetown

A group of men allegedly tied up the owners and instructed customers to lie down.

A MAN was shot dead on Friday during a business robbery in the Pinetown CBD.

Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele said it is alleged at about 5.05am, a group of men entered a cigarette shop in Stanfield Lane and pointed a gun at the complainant (52) and his father.

“The victims were tied up and customers were instructed, at gunpoint, to lie down. The suspects then stole different boxes of cigarettes and airtime. The complainant managed to untie himself and he shouted at the suspects who were loading boxes of cigarettes into a Hyundai H1 vehicle with an unknown registration,” said Manqele.

“One suspect pulled out a firearm and shot at the complainant. The complainant retaliated and fatally wounded the suspect. One pistol and six rounds of ammunition was recovered from the suspect,” added Manqele.

Police are still searching for the other men and anyone who has information can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
