Learners pledge to ‘SOS’

The learners said the time for each person to take a stand is now and their message is a clear SOS - Save Our Sisters.

IN support of taking action against gender-based violence amid the recent scourge of attacks on women around the country; and to stand in solidarity with those affected, Hillcrest High School’s Youth Advocacy Council invited students to participate in ‘Black Hat Friday’ on Friday, 6 September.

Learners were invited to sign a pledge: “I, as a young South African man, hereby pledge to support the women around me, actively speak out against problematic or derogatory language used by my male counterparts and condemn the acts of violence perpetuated against women in this country. I will stand against gender-based violence”.

The girls signed: “I, as a young South African woman, hereby pledge to support the women around me, speak out when I witness derogatory or problematic behaviour, report inappropriate actions and actively work toward a changed South Africa, where all women can feel safe as we live our lives. I stand against gender-based violence”.

The learners said the time for each person to take a stand is now and their message is a clear SOS – Save Our Sisters.
